How to Create the Perfect Maternity Capsule Wardrobe
A Maternity Capsule Wardrobe in 3 Easy Steps
If you are overwhelmed with closet chaos or just curious about the benefits of dressing with less and simplifying your wardrobe, then allow me to introduce to you; the capsule wardrobe.
If this is the first time you're hearing of a capsule wardrobe or collection You’ll want to take notes! or print out the guide at the end of this post.
A capsule wardrobe can be defined as:
- a collection of clothes and accessories that include only items considered essential
- a person’s basic collection of coordinating clothes that can be used to form the basis of outfits for all occasions
- a set of clothing, normally around 24 items, which can be mixed and matched to create a wide variety of outfits.
Since starting our boutique in 2015, we've moved in a direction from buying whats trendy to sourcing and manufacturing pieces that would form their own capsule collection of sorts and I must say I'm glad we have. Taking the leap to start a capsule wardrobe can be difficult and its hard to get advice on what to do and where to start when you are scrolling through endless articles of bloggers telling you what to buy with links of course! So many links! Ahh!
I'm here to tell you the rest of this article is free from adding 12 new tabs to your browser. The beauty of a capsule wardrobe all starts with what's already hanging in your closet.
3 STEPS TO DECLUTTERING + SIMPLIFYING YOUR WARDROBE
STEP 1: SEE + EVALUATE
Start by simply Evaluate your inventory of clothes, shoes, jewelry, bags and accessories. Seeing what you have is an important step in building a capsule wardrobe.
Look at what you’ve acquired, what you’ve spent, and what you never wear.
Some of the items I found when I did this to my own wardrobe amused both my husband and I so much!
STEP 2: START SORTING
Move the clothes on your bed to piles on the floor with a ruthless first pass sort. Don’t give it too much thought, just go with your first reaction.
Sort items into the following piles:
LOVE, MAYBE, SELL/DONATE, TRASH.
While donating is always a very charitable and great thing to do, selling gently used items on sites like poshmark or ebay can be a way of getting cash to use towards your new capsule wardrobe pieces
STEP 3: CHOOSE WISELY
Make a list of your 33 items by category. Start with the items you already use every day, and your go-to clothing items. This list may change over time as seasons change, or work/life situations change.
While very similiar in comtent, I did create a separate one after getting pregnant. For my everyday capsule wardrobe I've listed what I've discovered works after much trial & error and looking deeper into what complimented my everyday life the best
AND THE RESULTS? FOR ME IT WAS 15 VERSATILE & EFFORTLESS ALL SEASON ITEMS
My all seasons, never leave my closet wardrobe is 15 items of clothing including outerwear, 2 jewelry pieces, 5 accessories, and 4 pair of shoes. Shoes & Jewelry do change based on trend or season but these items are pretty much impossible to look bad in no matter what your body shape, size, or type may be.
