Baby Sleep Tips + Essentials
Baby Sleep Tips & Essentials Every Mom Should Know & Have
Parenting a newborn comes with all sorts of incredible highs - from witnessing their first smile to those late night heart exploding snuggles. But there's nothing quite like the life of newborn sleep deprivation, am I right mama's or am I right?! Parenthood is basically a series of never-ending all-nighters that leave you feeling the happiest you've ever been and the sleepiest you've ever been all rolled into one.
When we brought Charlotte home from the NICU, the first few nights were rough. I had her in a Halo Bassinest next to my bed and she just screamed bloody murder. It shouldn't come as any surprise though, the jokes about sleep deprivation start the moment you announce your pregnant.
Don't get me wrong. For breast feeding mama's with a few day old baby the Halo Bassinest is certainly something to check out! Charlotte had just spent a month in the NICU in her own little area she wanted her space at night. Within two weeks of being home we had her in her crib. Crib training doesn't mean peaceful sleeper though. Those epic midnight wails and 2:00am screams still echo in my ears. That ended though when I incorporated 1 simple routine & 3 products to bedtime. Charlotte sleeps through the night every night, all night and I'm here to tell you that by the end of this article you'll be well on your way to having your goodnight sleep back!
BEST BABY PRODUCTS FOR BETTER SLEEP
Actually buy 2! Seriously. You'll never worry about it being in the wash when bed time hits. While it was hard not to laugh hysterically at her in this thing it works like a charm. The pillowy padding helps counteract any sudden movements that would normally wake up your baby and also calms them like a swaddle. Look how peaceful!
Don't worry about fancy waterfall noises. A loud car exhaust outside, barking dog, even a door closing is all it takes to wake that sleeping bundle of joy. the white noise static sound drowns out anything that may disrupt baby.
3. A SECURITY BLANKET OR PACIFIER
Charlotte loves her WUBBANUBS (the little animals make spitting this out and fussing almost impossible!!). The lights and melodies that shine from the Swaddleme Elephantis a great option too if you don't feel comfortable with leaving a pacifier in the crib
4: ONE SIZE UP ORGANIC DIAPERS
Make sure to buy a box of diapers 1 size bigger than what your baby is currently in during the day. My mom gave me this tip and it was the last key to her sleeping happy & dry through the night.
I recommend Pampers Pure. You can get huge boxes from Amazon right to your door and you don't have to worry about baby growing out of them. They are literally growing into them! While I feel better leaving her in a diaper free from scents, allergens, etc. Our NICU used HUGGIES exclusively which is slightly more budget friendly!
TOP TIPS TO ACHIEVE BETTER SLEEP FOR BABY
LIGHT IT UP
Newborns have a hard time distinguishing whether it's day or night. Establishing healthy sleep habits by teaching your baby the difference of night and day by using light strategically can lead to better slumber.
During the day, open the blinds and allow sunlight to shine through and nap your baby in a well-lit room. In the evenings, dim the lights a few hours prior to bedtime to induce nighttime sleepiness. when your baby wakes in the night, don't turn on the lights or actively stimulate their brain.
SWADDLE YOUR BABY
The swaddle is magic for almost every mom in those first few months.
Swaddling is something nurses do almost immediately in the hospital and for good reason. It has been shown to be the cornerstone of comfort for babies. It recreates their snug and cozy womb and decreases their startle reflex to help them stay asleep longer.
Cant create a burrito like swaddle like the nurses? No worries! There are so many great products out there that make swaddling a breeze. We tried so so so many swaddles. These are the absolute best.
ESTABLISH A BEDTIME AND WORK IN A BEDTIME ROUTINE
Establishing a bedtime and bedtime routine can help wind your babe down and let her know bedtime is coming. It's consistent and calming and helps her get more drowsy. Plus, it gives us some nightly togetherness that we love and cherish. It can be as simple as dimming the lights and swaddling, but we love to also read her a book, give her a bath, kiss her on the cheek and recite our 'goodnight' poem. It's just nice to have some quiet, quality time together.
GET IN A DREAM FEED
I know, I had to google what this was too. But essentially, 'topping off baby's tank' with an extra feeding right before hoping in to bed will give baby a fuller tummy to combat middle of the night hunger.
MINIMIZE STIMULATION AROUND BEDTIME
More important than anything you buy or try! Babies as young as 4 weeks premature thrive on it. Ask any NICU Nurse. No surprises and consistency keep baby at peace as well as minimizing stimulation prior to bedtime. A warm bath, a book, or a song can help a child wind down.
